Although these guidelines aren't specifically for selecting interracial literature, they can be applied when selecting books about interracial families.

- Focused on the importance of family
- Highlighted differences while focusing on family
- Did not look down upon any race or culture
- Explored all different interracial families, and not just white and black families (the most common type of interracial family depicted in literature)
